The Passat I bought off John Robinson had a number of long-term problems.  
Among them, the plug wires were copper and the caps non-resistive.
 
The specification for the JS engine is 1 kohm in the lead and 5 kohm in the 
cap.   It runs _MUCH_ better now with stock wires and caps.
