RE: Fog Lights on a 1993 100cs Quattro.

Steve,

Finally got around to looking at the fog light... Thanks for the directions.
Could you provide a little more info:

a) What all do you get when you order the thingy from Carlson? Does this
include the lamp assembly, or just the housing?

b) Assuming that I have to transfer the lamp assembly from the old to new
housing...is aiming the fog lamp a hassle?

c) if you have replaced the lamp assembly, have you always replaced with
original wattage, or have you played with any alternate (brighter) bulbs?

Thanks for your help so far,

Eric

Eric, I hope you don't mind that I'm CC'ing the quattro list as someone
else may be interested.

Yes, it's very easy to get the fog light assembly out. It's not as easy
to replace the lens. The lens is glued to the front half of the plastic
housing, so you have to buy this as a unit (about $60 from Carlsen).
Once you have the assembly out, remove the two screws that hold the
housing together. Disconnect the wires to the light (if you opt to
remove the light at this point and want to re-use it, don't touch the
bulb!). The bulb housing and inner lens assembly is held in place by
the adjusting screw and two flexible joints (which I swear is just fuel
line!). Unscrew the adjusting arm all the way out. Using needle nose
pliars, pinch the hoses and pull/pry them out.

The replacement lens doesn't come with the adjustment knob/rod, so
either you buy a new one separately, or you try to reuse the old one.
It's a bit of a pain to remove the old one. You have to pull the
plastic knob off. I'm not sure if it's glued on, but the two times I
replaced my lenses, this was the most difficult part of the job! You
may be better off buying new ones.

Another thing that cropped up when I replaced my lens last month: The
new housings have bigger screw holes. I'm referring to where the two
halves attach. I had Carlsen get me 3 others, thinking this was a
manufacturing defect. They're all like this. In addition, we took
apart a new fog light assembly and found that they went to bigger screws
to hold the two halves together. This means that if you have the
smaller holes, then you'll have to slightly drill out the hole in the
(older) back half to accomodate bigger screws. This must be a recent
design change since the first fog light replacement I did about a year
ago wasn't like this.

If you have any further questions, let me know...
