Alternator VR+Brush interchangable?

I bought the voltage regulator and brush set for my 83 5Ks but later found
out that it had larger problems with it and instead will be installing a
dime-a-dozen GM alternator. The parts store does not take returns on
electricals so I would like to get some use out of the VR+Brush unit. Is
this the same part that will fit into my 87 5KQ? The 83 is a 90A and I'm
assuming the 87 is also, just want to be sure before I install it and my
battery explodes, ruins my interior, melts cd collection, spooks my dog, and
blinds me.
