I have watched this thread for some time now and up to this point have not
said anything, but I have to add my .02 here.  My father bought a '97 A8 4.2q
in Oct.  I have driven this car a bit, a trip to Vermont and back, and around
town a little bit.  No the A8 is not a "sports sedan" but it is a very
competent luxury sedan.  It is powerful, quiet, and has all the bells and
whistles.  I have also driven the new body style 740iL a little bit and I have
to say that the A8 is more of a "drivers" car than the 740iL.  The A8 feels
lighter, more agile, and faster.  I have not looked to see if the #'s show the
same thing.  I know that there was some comments on whether or not the tires
would change things much, IMHO I have to say that tires could help alot.  The
stock 225/60/16 GY whatevers suck.  They howl like banchees around corner, but
are very quiet and smooth running in the stright line.  I would love to have
the A8, I would like to stiffen it a bit and I think 17" or 18" wheels would
help alot.  My father absolutly loves the car, every time he takes it on a
trip he comes home saying how much pleasure he gets from driving it.  My
father has no asperations of being a race car driver but he does enjoy driving
so he is an enthusiats.  Just had to add my .02 here. sorry for the BW.
