Removing door trim from audi 4000csq

Hello I am removing the door trim from my 87 4000csq, here is what has 
happened, after removing the plastic/vynal trim, there is now the glue that 
they used to get the stuff to stick on, well that glue will not come off. I 
have tried goof off, and that has not helped. What I am thinking is that it 
is going to have to be ground off with a disk sander or orbital sander? has 
anyone else done this?
