with all the talk about quattro and it's design, it is pertinent to repeat the
published rumours about the s6. this apparently will have clutches on all
driveshafts to individually control their speed and torque. aka 959 and (some)
nissan gtr (although this is really a rwd machine).
to address the f:r issue (or more particularly polar moment), is tougher while
keeping longitudional motors. bear in mind that the awesome wrc machinery
generally has 60:40 weight distributon (with tranverse motors eg. escort
cosworth), considerably worse than my ur-q or rs2 (57:43). the way opel solved
this (longitudional motor) problem for the german fia class 1 racer was the
installation of "dog ear" gearsets from the bellhousing-mounted front diff (as
with quattro), which extended up either side of the motor, and terminated in
the front driveshafts. this allowed the motor to be mounted pretty much
whereever it was best. penalty would be friction and noise i guess.
