I agree with Pete's observations.  Had a tree branch fall on my hood during
an ice storm this winter.  It left to weird, long and narrow dents/creases
with some scuffed but not broken paint.  Local body shop wanted $600 bucks
and claimed it would have to paint.  I used my local dent wizard for $150.
He did it in one and a half hours and buffed out the scuffs.  If I look hard
I can see a wave but that is about it.  Don't forget that perhaps the body
shop may make the body panel perfect but the paint matching is usually
difficult.  Especially on pearl Audis.
