Re: Why *I* drive an Audi (no more urQ)
Now Jeff, you just had to go and say something I could disagree with....;-)
>>> Jeffrey J. Goggin <audidudi@mindspring.com> - 4/13/98 9:27 PM >>>
I'm not sure that price has anything to do with it. At one time, the Ur-Q
was Audi's flagship; after that, it was the V8 and today, it's the A8q. The
former is a performance car and the latter are (arguably) luxury cars ...
>>>No argument here! Although, I may contest the urQ classification as the flagship car. One-offs are always the specialty car of the line. Not seeing the urQ transition to V8, A8.
my mind, this progression neatly sums up the change in Audi's direction over
the past fifteen years.
I also find it interesting that over the same time period, BMW evolved from
the 735i (definitely a luxury car) to the M3/M5/540i, et al...
>>>Lest we not forget the L7 / 735, L6 / 633-635....same cars, different attitudes. The Bayern troupe also committed to luxury models. I'm already feeling for the guy that compared the CGT to urQ...
>>>Audi had similar car differentiation in the 100 v 200. AND WMB also worked on production "sports" cars like M1. At least the bimmer folk continued with the two door coupe, ala M3, 850 CSi, 840CS....yet, I do not consider those sports cars either. In opinion, I consider them similar to our CQ or even (sigh) Cabrio. Basically a "sporty" luxury coupe. Of course, I'm only considering the NA market, hence no 1991 urQ or 1993 S2 or 1994 RS2 to at least tempt the niche market here.
>>>(Sacriledge warning) Right now, I'm thinking the VW Golf Gti syncro with the V6 would be the closest VAG has to an urQ successor (Even plans to join WRC?) and that's not saying much. Audi need to get back in the game.
