Reality check [WAS: RE: 5spd conv. ]
Since the only slushbox I ever cared for was installed in a 450SLC I've
never really cared how (un)reliable the Audi boxes are. I think that we
should infuse a bit of reality here though ... I've got a few friends
and co-workers that own Taurus/Sable ... built by Ford. Auto trannies
in these cars are at least as poorly designed as those made by Audi.
Everyone I know that has a Taurus/Sable has had a major service
performed on the tranny. My friend Larry's *92* Taurus wagon just had
the tranny fail. Sedans/wagons/SHOs ... the whole bunch have had to
have slushers rebuilt.
If anything the Frod seems to have is compassion ... Larry's wife was
returning with the kids from a trip to Monterey (~ 80 miles away) when
the tranny went ... it finally died right in front of the local dealer
... :)
