I've had the intake manifold off and the head has been disconnected
since last week. I was going to take out the head/EM/turbo/WG/downpipe
as a unit, but last night I just decided to try taking of the EM bolts
for the heck of it ... I had no problems getting any of the nuts to come
off (AAMOF I was thinking it was too easy)! The biggest problem was
just getting to the one on the bottom side of cyl #3, but fortunately I
was able to get that one out as well. Anyway, that meant I was able to
get the head off and see how bad the damage to the valves and piston
crowns were. Well, I've definitely got bent valves in 3 cylinders, and
although it is possible to see where they touched the pistons, I've got
to say that it appears that if the contact did anything, it was simply
to clean off the stuff that was baked on ... :) It is also interesting
to see the way Audi chose to shape the combustion chamber in the piston
crown. While the QTC crowns are simply dished in symmetrically, the MC
pistons have a deeper indentation on the opposite side of the engine
frome the valves ... probably right under the spark plugs.

I'm looking for suggestions as to what I should clean up and how. I
notice that there is some black crud cooked on the top of the cylinder
bore above the point where the top rings go, should I attempt to break
this stuff off? I suppose the other issue is if I should clean off the
piston crowns ... if so, what should I use? Finally, I'll be cleaning
up the deck of the block, putting rags in the cylinders while I do this.
In the past I simply scraped off the old stuff and then gave it a light
sanding ... are there any beter techniques?

TIA!
