voltage regulator mods/upgrades

I've been wondering for a while now if it would be possible to swap the
(TO-3) transistor in the Bosch voltage regulator for one with a slightly
higher turn on/off voltage?  Any transistor heads out there have an
opinion or good cross reference manual that would help with this?  It
could probably benefit from a real heat sink, too.  Seems neater than
adding a harness and an outboard regulator...
