Der Spring, 'dere Dave

Yo, Dave. That spring looks to be a really smart design by audi IMO, to
eliminate no less than 4 circlips found on the 5 speed transmission Torsen
mounting to the shafts.

Take a look at 016 Torsen app:
*  fig 5   N 703 054 01  CIRCLIP
*  fig 6   N 012 350 1    CIRCLIP
*  fig 8   N 012 371 1    CIRCLIP
*  fig 12 N 012 319 1    CIRCLIP
*  fig 13 N 012 319 1    CIRCLIP

Yikes, all to mount two shafts and a torsen together. Seems like a lot? Ok,
let's go to the 6 speed transmission of the RS2
*  fig 11  N 012 376 1  CIRCLIP
*  fig 7    O1E 409 881  SPRING

So, that goofy little spring seems to have eliminated a whole bunch of Torsen
mounting and locating parts, like 4 of em. And the input shaft doesn't have
any on it, betcha that makes for some quicker torsen changes on the six speed.

I think you are trying to give Gleason credit, when in fact, that spring
should have given some transmission engineer at audi a superman award by every
audi mechanic that swore at least 5 times while installing a Torsen. On a 6
speed, the mechanic only swears once.

Gotta like that.
