Um, no.
The 5 cylinder Volvo engine was designed from scratch by Volvo, and is
solely manufactured by Volvo.
You may be thinking of the PRV-6, long ago discontinued. A number of years
ago (15?), Volvo entered into joint development with Peugeot and Renault to
design a 6 cylinder that made its way into some older 240 series vehicles,
Peugeots and Renaults. I think this same motor was also used in the Bricklin.
But the 5 cylinder is strictly Swedish. It does sound a bit different than
some other engines on startup, but the country of origin has nothing to do
with it. The 4 cylinder Volvo engines are a bit smoother, IMO, and the
sixes are smoother still.
And I'll bet the upcoming 10 cylinder is like silk :)
Hope that clarifies things.
