Report--Call to RPI Re: Wilwood brakes
I just got off of the phone with Andy at RPI and he was able to answer a
few questions for me.
* They are using the Dynalite caliper as I suspected.
* The rotors shown in the ad are not the correct ones. The rotors sold
are _not_ cross-drilled, and the ad should not have depicted them as
such.
* The rotors _are_ an off-the-shelf item from Brembo. According to
Andy, they are a "new application for Audi." I didn't press that issue
any further.
* The pads sold with the kit are a "Polymatrix-D" compound. I've heard
of these before, but that's as far as my experience with them goes.
Anybody know more?
* He has the VW kits in stock ready for sale, and claims that he "could
have a kit assembled for an Audi in 2-3 days."
* The Audi kit (that he and I discussed) was prototyped on Coupe GT.
Andy told me that he has sold 23 of the kits for VW's in the last month
and a half and has gotten great responses from the buyers. (What else
is he going to say! <grin>)
He also volunteered a "more than adequate" discount on these kits if
there were ~10 people interested in purchasing them. If there is
anybody _seriously_ interested in this kit, please let me know and I
will take the responsibility to call Andy back and pin him down to
precise numbers.
As an afterthought, I asked him if they would be willing to sell the
mounting brackets for the calipers separately. (I was thinking about
assembling my own kit, using sources I already get discounts at.) His
response was that they had done so in the past, but he wasn't sure if
that was going to continue to be the case.
I did tell him about the Q-list, and he took Dan's email address (head's
up, Dan!) and the URL for the list's main page. He did say that they
are planning to further increase their "toys" for the Audi's if the
market showed an interested.
That's all that I got out of him at this point. He said they were very
committed to customer satisfaction. The example he gave was swapping
out brake pads for those people who determined that the Polymatrix pads
weren't aggressive enough for track use.
HTH!
