Windshield Wiper position varies???

Just noted something WIERD on my 87 5KQ.
When I am setting still or going slow the driver's wiper goes below the hood
line & "thumps".  It doesn't go far enough on the left swing.
As you go 30-50 mph. it changes the pattern & stops just above the hood line
& is OK on its left swing.
I doubled checked to make sure I hadn't drunk to much coffee.
Meybe the Audi gods are ahving fun with me.!!!
