VIN# question
My 1987 5kcstq appears to have the same engine as a 1989-94 200 TQ,
according to the coded meaning of the VIN number. I wonder if other 1987
5kcstq's have the same engine code designation in their VIN numbers. Mine
is WAUHE0449HN065233. The "E" is for engine ID.
Where did I look for decoding information? Bentley, and a VIN# web site.
Neither of these two different sources of code interpretation for 1987 Audi
VIN numbers contained reference to the letter "E" actually found in
position 5 of my vehicle's VIN number. I refer to the actual fifth symbol
counting from the left.
Except for the 5th position code letter, my 1987 5kcstq has a VIN number
that is consistent with all the other decoding information in Bentley and
at the website <http://www.euroselect.com/eu00003.htm>
The Bentley for the 1984-88 Audi 5ks and 5kcs, gasoline, turbo, and turbo
diesel shows only two possible letters for the 5th position, namely "B" and
"C", and assigns both a 2.2 liter volume, with "B" indicating 100 HP and
"C" indicating 130 HP.
The VIN# website confirms these two possibles, and adds a third for the
turbo diesel.
Neither source mentions the letter "E" which appears in the 5th position on
my VIN number.
Scanning on down the list of engine designations at the VIN# website, I
find the letter "E" indicated for the 2.2 liter 5cyl turbo model 200 in the
89-94 100/200 series. My car is an 87.
This seems like discrepant data, and so I post this as a question to the
q-list, confident that dozens of other 87 5kcstq owners have already found
some answers.
