Re: WTB: non running '84 4kq
Your best resources for a cheap distressed 4kq is your local LARGE
circulation daily paper or sleaze ball used car superstore. This is
where you'll find the truly misunderstood, underapreciated, mistreated
quattros. The more misspelled words and mis/dis-information you find in
the ad, the more likely you've found someone who hasn't the faintest
idea what they're selling.
Example: I recently picked up quite a nice '85 4ksq for $895 from the
biggest/sleaziest used car lot on Western Ave. in Chicago (Home of AT
LEAST 200 slimy used car lots over its 20 mile stretch through the
city.) The morons thought it had a bad clutch (just a loose pedal
linkage and poorly bled hydraulic system!) so they dropped their asking
price to $895 from $3995 (ludicrous.) The ad read: "84 Audi Quattra,
$895" Wrong year even!
You'd be amazed at the number of Audi's (mainly 84-7 4000 and 5000 fwd
cars, but a quattro now and then) that show up in the U-Pull junk yards
here that look perfect and show no immediately apparent signs of WHY
they were junked.
Rescuing one of these poor cars from its cruel owner (before it ends up
in the bone yard) is far more noble than prying one away from its loving
owner on the qlist-- much like adopting an abused dog from the local
Humane Society.
BEWARE, however, that any $1000 (or less) 4000q/sq/csq you buy WILL (not
might) end up being at least a $3000 car, even if you already have a
motor to drop in, and do all the work yourself. (I'm up to about $1000
in parts already on my '85 in 2 months @ wholesale prices, and still
have MANY minor repairs to make)
Might I also add that the fit & finish, and availability of parts is
much better for an 85-7 4kq. You're much more likely to find a rust-free
85-7, and also much more likely to find a leather interior and other
niceties. I've had a very hard time finding, and PAYING for, (even at
wholesale/junkyard prices,) the rear muffler, H-4 headlights, tail
lights, old style (pig tail) window switches and other parts for the -84
4000q. Most important-- the old style differential lock setup includes
a cable which rusts to hell when the diff locks are not used for a while
(both servos are on the rear diff, and the center is actuated by this
cable.) EXPECT the diff locks to be non-functional on any
underappreciated 4kq you find, and expect to have trouble ($$$) reviving
the servos/cable on an 84 or prior 4kq.
Just my 2 cents.
Eric.
