If you decide to feel more environmentally responsible :) you can evacuate
your own system.  I looked for the URL ... sorry I couldn't find it ... but
there is a site via which you can get your certification to work on
automotive refrigeration systems for ~$10.  I know that the automotive
program at the local community college offers a similar program.  With this
certification you may purchase refrigerant ... even the dangerous and deadly
R12.  What you can then do is evacuate your own system ... it can be done
without the special equipment that is used to recycle refrigerant, and
storing the vile mixture in a separate vessel.  At this point you may then
service your system with whichever refrigerant suits your preference.  In my
local area the city government has hazardous waste collection at certain
times of the year.

This is an interesting side effect of the madness that was created when R12
was banned ...
