 Usually they just need the voltage regulator/brush assembly... the
 brushes wear down.  (and see below.)

and it charged the whole time. I have to get some fuel and drive it at night
to see if  it was only a bad connection. My gas gauge is not working correctly
and I fill it up more often just to keep from getting stranded.
