I stand corrected on the removal of the tranny shifter linkage.  I was
not aware that it could be just popped off at the selector rod. If this
selector/locating rod is the one toward the front of the tranny it is a
real bi*ch to get to with the tranny in place (IMO harder to get to than
the spline toward the rear). 

Yes I did have trouble re-aligning my shifter rod since I had only
marked it for depth but it was not too too bad to get it back in
alignment.  There is a procedure similar to what Huw describes for this.
