10,000 new Beetles recalled

     Volkswagen 

                  NEW YORK (CNNfn) - The new 1998 Beetle,
                  acclaimed by critics and hailed by safety inspectors, is
                  being recalled, Volkswagen of America Inc.
                  announced Friday. 
                     The U.S. subsidiary of Volkswagen AG of
                  Germany said it is voluntarily recalling 10,000 Beetles,
                  all the Beetles sold this year, to correct electrical
                  wiring in the engine compartment that poses a
                  potential fire hazard.
                     About 8,500 new Beetles are affected in the
                  United States. About 1,600 New Beetles sold in
                  Canada are also involved. 
                     No accidents or injuries were attributed to the
                  problem.
