But where did those alcohols and acids come from? My synthetic organic
chemistry isn't very up-to-date, but I'll venture that a great amount of
synthetic organics still use fossil feedstocks (crude oil & gas) as a basic
source of raw materials. Of course, maybe the Archer Daniel Midlands Corp.
has changed all that.

I take Avi's point to be that most organic lubricants can lay claim to
having a "Dino" heritage (more likely it's fossil _plants_?). But I don't
think that means they have similar lubricating/wear properties.
