Help with 84 4ks Quattro

Well, the quattro decided to misbehave this weekend at the rally, so
now  I come to beg 
knowledge from the list.

The facts:
	Car got very warm due to a cooling leak and a need to clear the stage 
	before stopping.
	Car has spark and fuel, plugs are not fouled.
	Car refuses to start, doesn't even sound like its firing.

Any ideas what might be occuring?  I suspect something serious such as
lack of compression
I'd like some suggestions on what to investigate beyond a complete
teardown, though that 
is probably what I will end up doing.
