Water Pump Friction Rings

Hey Listers!

What's the story? Does this part (026.121.017A) ever
wear out? Does it need to be replaced when you do
the water pump? I've never heard it discusses here,
or in the Bentley or the Haynes, even though the
diagrams do show it.
