There is (or used to be) a safer way to raise compression slightly.

I used to get catalogs from a company in Birmingham, Alabama, named
PAECO. They rebuild engines to a number of different levels of
capability. Complete blueprinting & balancing, Nitriding crankshafts, and
allsorts.

One service they performed for pistons was to coat the tops with a
substance that is initially soft and almost sticky, but which over
time, hardens into a ceramic whose primary purpose is to shield
the piston from heat. Benefits are less heat soak and some protection
from lean fuel conditions. But it also boosted the compression a
little bit.

I bought some stuff from them years ago, like a Weber rebuild kit,
and a Wieand air filter. I always intended them to do the rebuild
on the Porsche 924 engine I wanted to buy and drop into a 100LS.

Anybody else ever heard of them, know if they still exist?
