plastic headlight lens?

Owning an Audi has made me more headlight-aware than ever before. When I
looked at my daughter's '91 Volvo 740 wagon this morning, I was surprised
to find that the Cibie/Volvo headlight lenses were made of lightweight
plastic!

Are plastic headlights commonly used on other makes of cars? I can't
imagine the lighting from these would be any worse than Audi headlights of
the same vintage, but certainly the plastic ought to be a lot cheaper to
replace (and more resistant to stone damage?).
