Ford has used plastic headlights on most, if not all aero headlights
starting with the Tempo and pickups.  My wifes 87 Merkur XR4Ti
has them as well.

The problem with them is that the scratch easily and they yellow
with age but I do believe the are more resistant to stone chips.

I don't know that they are any cheaper to replace.
