info needed on gearbox...

Hi!

I am looking for some information regarding the 5-speed transmission
fitted to 1989-1991 Audi 200 front-wheel drive cars and those fitted
to earlier 5kt/100 motors. First of all, I understand that the later
models had a electronic speed sensor attached to the box where the
earlier models had the cable for the speedometer; is this correct?
Next, is it a simple matter to install the electronic sensor into the
position where the cable attachment used to be in order to fit a
earlier gearbox in place of the manual gearbox fitted to the 1989-1991
manual 200t? The idea would be to source a early box and rethread the
existing fitment hole to take/hold whatever sensor needs to be
inserted. A part number for such a compatible gearbox would go a long
way on this end, if possible to find.

The reason for this is that earlier gearboxes are inevitably cheaper
than those on the later turbo cars (and probably in a worse state
as well due to age...but cheap! $100 or less, compared to $1000 or
more!)

TIA.

G.
