Parts cost me $160 (timing belt, water pump, idler pulley,
front crank seal, thermostat & seal, something else?), labor
would have cost $150 to $250. I did it myself not so much to
save money as it's kind of a rite-of-passage with the I5
engine to be able to change the timing belt. It beat me once
before, so I just *had* to go at it again. This time St. George
slew the dragon!
As for the car you're considering buying, the dealer can give
you a printout of all the service that was performed on it at
either that dealership or service peformed at any dealership
that was pro-active enough to enter it into the national database.
Of course, try to get the current owner to give you copies of the
service records. If you post to the list what's been done and how
many miles it has on it, we'll be able to give you accurate advice
on what to expect in the coming miles.
This was my first type-44 Audi, so my knowledge tends to be limited
to this one vehicle, although I've owned nuerous other Audis.
