I bought my '98 A4 1.8TQ on 22 December 97 and it already shows 4700mi
on the odo (this coming Wed it goes to Don Rosen P-A for the first oil
change).
It has been _totally_and_completely trouble free, quite in the
Accordesque fashion, but unlike most other cars on the US market,
including the Accord itself, it provides driving pleasure in industrial
duty quantities.
Maybe your car is just a random bad example, Oleg? Maybe the '98 A6 is
too new and is not yet sorted out (remember the crappy IR remotes on the
'96 A4 2.8 or the broken WG valve rods on the '97 1.8T?)

Did you have a chance to look at an V70AWD Cross Country? I saw it in
person for the first time this morning at a local dealer, the car oozes
class! And I thought it was an ugly Outbackish wagon-SUV mongrel.
It also has an enormous cargo capacity AND is available with a manual
transmission.
Methinks that at $38k sticker it's quite a buy.
