Playing around in the junkyards this weekend, found a '87 5000CS. So I
took the opportunity to practice changing front struts. When I took off
the camber adjusting plate, I noticed that the rubber bushing on the
plate (holding the strut shaft) was badly torn underneath, so the
question is should I go out and buy 2 of the camber plates now or was
this just a freak occurance?

No, it's very typical. By all means replace them. They were around 14
bux each last time I checked.
OTOH, the top strut bearings [the skinny plastic ones, either red or
yellow] last forever, no need to replace those.
