Re: 4kqs Exhaust
Perhaps I'm a little late posting to this thread; however, I though I'd at
least share some of my experience and thoughts.
The OEM exhaust system (non SS) on my '87 4Kcsq lasted almost exactly 6
years and 120,000 miles.
The Blaufergnugen replacement system lasted almost 2 years and about 40,000
miles. My style of driving did not change. I emailed the folks at Blau
about this but did not receive a reply.
To my way of thinking, the Blau replacement system is (after you add in
the costs and hassles of installation) at least as expensive as the factory
piece if not more. And aftermarket products like the Stainless Steel
Scorpion (no experience with these) start looking like a bargain at around
$800 if you plan to keep the car.
My Blau system was replaced with an Ur-q SS 2.5" system I purchased from
Ben Howell. With a turbo style muffler there is not sufficient back
pressure for optimal performance. At some engine speeds I actually lose
power while at others there is definitely more. The torque curve has
several peaks at what appear to be a harmonic interval of some sort. Peaks
at about 1700, 3400 and 5100 rpm - see the pattern? I tried this system
with both a test pipe and the cat in place and power is definitely better
with the cat due to the added back pressure. Borla makes a universal
non-turbo muffler that may work well. Incidentally, my car has a Schrick
272 cam.

It is 2.25" and looks just like the OEM - just doesn't last.
