Mark,

I have successfully removed the turbo side half shaft without removing the
strut assembly -or- removing any exhaust parts (other than the inner boot
shield). I have done this on a '86 and a '87. The trick is to unbolt the
inner flange, then lift the shaft end above and forward of the transaxle drive
plate. There is sort of a 'pocket' there where additional clearance can be
gained. Push the outer end through the hub (using a nifty Proto hub puller
tool) until the splines are almost clear. Be sure that the inner shaft end
stays in the 'pocket' and does not bind. Turn the steering wheel all the way
to the left. You should be able to work the outer end of the shaft through
the hub with no problems.

Reverse procedure for installation. Note: wrap inner shaft end with plastic
so new grease does not get contaminated before it is mated with the drive
plate.

Other note: be sure to use the correct tool to remove the flange bolts. It is
a 12 point, triple square, metric internal wrench bit, 10mm in size. Hope this
helps.
