UrQ Suspension Problems - HELP
Last weekend I replaced the A-arm bushings (later style),
shocks (Billsteins), strut bearings (blue), subframe bushings
and tranny bushings on my 1983 UrQ. One thing of note was
that just like the previously replaced engine mount on the turbo
side, the tranny bushing was rock hard and cracked. The
subframe bushings had all separated from the metal inserts.
Now the car seems to handle a million times better (konis
suck) but there is a nasty crunch noise if I turn slowly into an
inclined driveway (one side hits the incline first) and an
associated clang that sounds like a spring twisting
(sometimes get the noise after accelerating hard in first gear). I
tightened the strut insert nut with the spring compressed but
when I checked last night (I removed the upper mounting nut)
the spring retainer nut was only hand tight. Does anyone have
any thoughts on why and how I have this crunch noise. This
job was a PITA, but I managed to do it all in 24 hrs. What did I
miss. I have all the right tools, I thought.
One other note, now if I rock the car by pressing on the wheel I
can feel a slight clunk, clunk if I get it going quite well. I am
pretty sure I didn't overtighten the CV joint nut, but you never
know.
Please respond directly as I'm at work right now.
Thanks,
Andrew Finney
