4k key replacment from dealer

Anyone know if I can have a key made with just the VIN? My dealer told me 
to pull the door handle and bring it in (which causes a bit of a locking 
problem for me, and I don't want to disconnect the vacuum lines). Is the 
key code stamped somewhere else?  My original key wandered off, and now all 
I have is a duplicate that wasn't cut well. As a result, I can open the 
doors, but starting the car and opening the trunk are a real PITA!
