I have an similar problem with my dashboard lights on my Audi 100 typ 43..
It appeared that the rheostat to regulate the brightness of this illumination 
(emerging from the clock on my car) is faulty..
Some (or more) turning high and low on this knob resulted in reappearing
of the dash light, but results are rather unpredictable.. :-(
Maybe some contact-cleaning fluid (from an electronic parts shop) may have
good results, but then you will have to take apart the console to some extent..
Best could be changing the rheostat as such on the 'print-board'..
