how do you make the a/c colder?

Drive it farther north.

Seriously though, you obviously had it converted to R134a because there was
a problem in the R12 system. Our experience is that sometimes the system is
converted but the original problem is not corrected. One of the A/C service
organizations even goes so far as to recommend getting a system with a
problem fixed with R12, then remove the R12 and convert to R134a. By the way
most leak detectors are junk and even good ones will only detect a leak if
the technician holds the probe on the leaking area long enough. Someone
needs to put gauges on the system and diagnose it. Among other things, it
could be:
        1. Low refrigerant charge
        2. High refrigerant charge
        3. Too much oil
        4. Leaking reeds in compressor.
The shop that converted it should be able to correct it.
