It can definitely be different. I have several cam gears, and there
are
differeces. If I align the gears on the camshaft keyway slot, there is a
difference of as much as 1/2 tooth between them. So the initial starting
point can be different by 1/2 tooth....

Do offset cam gear keys exist for Audis? On vehicles with cam gears aligned
with a woodruff-like key, an offset key allows one to choose a particular
offset without needing an adjustable gear.
