Uh oh ... funny noises

Driving my '92 100S to work on Friday morning and heard an unusual vibration
type sound from under the car. Only present when accelerating from a full
stop. Sound is present for a couple of seconds when accelerating, then goes
away. Immediately my mind turns to the tranny (and the $6k replacement cost
from the dealer). But the tranny seems to be operating fine (no rough
shifts, no slippage in acceleration when noise present, etc). The noise is
not present every time I accelerate from a stop. Could I be overlooking
something else down there that may be causing this problem? Any btdt on the
signs of tranny failure (especially the 4 sp autos on the earlier V6's)?
