Re: can audis/vws take v.high mileage??

The I4 is probably as tough as the I5 when treated the same way.
However, I reved my old Passat (I4 1588cc 85bhp) much harder than any of
my Audis (I5 2144/2226cc 136bhp) because it was underpowered. It had a
blown head gasket when I bought it and despite a head skim and regasket
job it blew the head gasket again shortly after. I think the engine was
pretty knackered when I sold the car for scrap at 135K miles.
By knackered, I mean:
a poor idle
lots of oil in the engine breather which ruined air filters and clogged
up the carb
a tendancy to run with no lubrication (awful sound) for about 60 seconds
after an oil change.

All the I5s I have come across seem to be unburstable. A friendly
mechanic told me that he kept a spare engine in the back of his workshop
for 5 years and eventually scrapped it because no body ever needed one!
I have one in my garage just in case he's wrong!!
