Tips & Opinions

Just joined the list.
Own a 1993 Audi 90S (fwd only), pearl white.
Wish to comment on couple items and give a few tips.

Comments:
1) Sony 10 disc CD changer that hooks onto antenna wire
is a killer system. My fiance's Protege had it in when
she bought it (lease return) and it works great, might
invest in one myself. Call Crutchfield.
2) The MOMO shift knob should look kinda like a cobra
head, the mouth area would point away from you. I'm
thinking about making my own cobra-head shift knob
out of hardwood, but haven't had time to think about it.
3)The 2.8l V6 doesn't have any leak problems that I am
aware of, although I do know that synthetic oil has a
tendency to leak past dam near any seal. I ran the half
synethetic stuff in my Toyota truck and had minor leaks.

Tips:
1) When I bought my 90S it had a cheesy vinyl shift lever
boot, looked like sh**. Just in front of the E-brake lever
is a little cover plate that pops off and you can access a
phillips head screw that you loosen and the whole shift
boot comes right off (after removing the knob). Then the
upper plastic piece unscrews into two pieces and the bottom
frame has four screws holding it together. Opened up a seam
on the stock boot and made two pattern pieces from cardboard
(there's a long and short side on the bottom frame). Then
I cut the necessary four pieces for a new boot out of leather and
sewed them together, I have access to an industrial type sewing
machine, but any machine that can handle denim should work,
just use good quality thread. OR you can check out a canvas shop
in your area, I'm sure they would sew the pieces together for you.
The last step is to reinstall the boot and put some sort of leather
protectant on it, I used beeswax, melted into the leather with a
hair dryer. I could probably make some more if people want them,
not sure how much I would have to charge though.

2)I had a temp light on my dash light up every now and then. Went
through
the usual process of elimination, coolant was topped off and the
right
mixture, checked the electrical connection for the coolant tank
sensor,
nothing made a difference, so I ignored it, eventually it stayed
off.
Then I happened to be driving with the windows down and thought
there
was an airplane landing nearby, turns out the radiator fans were
stuck
on MAX cool. Checked the cooling fan relay, worked fine. Took it in
to the dealer I bought it at (Burnsville VW, MN) under a used car
warranty. Turns out one of the temp sensors was bad, so what you
say?
Well if it happens to you, you can probably save some money by
going to you local VW dealer and getting the part. The VW V6s and
the
Audi V6s use the EXACT SAME PART!

3) I want to get more air to my engine. I've been told to drill 3/8"
inch holes
in my lower air box. I don't really want to do that as it will draw
in hot
air from the engine. Noticed the connector hose between the air box
and
the deflector behind the headlight is VERY SMALL. I am currently
examining
a way to put a larger tube between the air box and the deflector,
that way I can
get more air to the filter and it will still be cool, fresh air from
in front of the
car. The idea is to find something cheap and easily accessble to
anybody, so that
anyone on the list can do the same mod to his/her car.
