As you approach hydroplaning speed water bunches up in front of your 
tire.  Eventually the water can't get out of the way fast enough due to 
it's viscous nature, treads help some if the water isn't already deeper 
than them.  The pressure builds until it equals the pressure on the 
other side of your tread (air pressure) then begins to lift.
