S6 differential switch

Hi all:

Can anyone explain to me why the S6 (1995) and apparently earlier S4s 
have a differential switch between the seats, while the later S6 ('96 & 
'97) don't seem to have one.

What is the switch's function (change 50/50 split?) and why are later 
models not equipped with it?

Just a question from an amateur.
