'96/'97 S6 in USA

Hello!

New member here, thrilled to find other Audi nuts (in the kindest 
sense).

I'm currently looking (aka drooling) at an 1997 S6, here in Canada. I 
understand that they were not available in the US, as the result of 
emission standards. Is anyone able to tell me more about this? Would 
future resale be limited to Canadians and/or would improved emission 
system be expensive or impossible.

This car fascinates me, and appears to be less expensive than waiting it 
out for the new S4/S6s. Any comments would be thrilling.
