It's definitely not just the coolant thermostat, because the needle never
rises. I'll get a new multi-function temperature sensor tomorrow at
Carlsen Audi here in Palo Alto, CA, and see if that does it.

I don't know how old the timing belt is (138k on car). It doesn't look bad
to me through the little inspection hole, but it seems hard to tell.
