so what makes a 4kq run rich?

hey all, this is on the 85 q.  The new plugs, with probably maybe 1000 
miles on them are completely black already and im getting very poor 
mileage.

Today, and without running it to see how it works i replaced the air 
filter and the plug wires.  

So, what would cause the car to run rich?  the oxygen sensor seems to be 
the most likely culprit as it is original.

this is what a friend suggested: test the O2, and then the intake system. 
 then check the thermostatic bypass air valve.


Anything else you can think of?
