Hi Huw;

    Actually, the idiot lights do come on when the alternator stops
charging. I had the same thing happen on my '91 200q. The brushes wore out
and it seemed like every idiot light on the dash lit up. If it wasn't for
the voltmeter showing no charge, I would have been one confused individual.
A $3 set of brushes fixed the problem.
