The term was also used far earlier than that.  Back in the high rolling
days of piracy the government would send out sailing vessels which gave the
appearance of being fat merchant ships but were actually heavily armed
military vessels.  They would sail the trade routes pretending to be on
their way home with a load of treasure and providing a nice tempting target
for pirates.  When the pirates would show up the Q-ship would drop its
cover and blow the pirates right out of the water.  At least that was the
idea.

It seems to me that the term q-ship applies quite nicely to a modified Audi
turbo quattro.  :-)
