I won't give you a war story. As another respondent said, yes you must
maintiain the vehicle etc., etc. But there are known 'bugs' with this
vehicle and you should check them out when you buy. They are particular to
this model and are outside the regular envelope of blaming lack of
maintenance. This is the reason you are on this list in the first place,
right? So:

First a little background: I have a 90 V8, 2nd owner. Total 80k+ miles.
First owner didn't drive it much. I know the first owner took meticulous
care of it based on dealer records. I have done the same, using synthetic
engine oil as well. Here are KNOWN problems. You'll just have to deal
with them. Better to know the 'bugs' ahead'a time.

   * 1990 OEM Steering rack can/ will! leak eventually (don't know about
other years). If you let it go too long (like me :-( ) it will leak
all over the bottom of the subframe, saturate the subframe and
transmission mounts (made of rubber) and cause premature deterioration.
This leads to a loose engine, not dangerous, but cause the engine to
twist, under acceleration, to the point where the tranny hits the body
of the car causing annoying noises. --Find out if its been replaced
with a new or rebuilt steering rack with stainless steel sleeves.

   * Audi used a flimsy connecting rod in the front door locks. The
driver's door lock usually breaks first. You then cannot unlock the
door from the outside using the key. The key does still arm the car
alarm and you can use the inside knob to lock the door; just not the
   key.

   * The front disk brakes are unique to say the least. They work but the
rotors are expensive and can only found in Audi dealerships or Audi
   specialty parts shops.

   * Get to know a good Audi specialty parts shop. You won't find parts
for this car in alot of stores outside of an oil filter.

Make sure any car you get is inspected by somebody...a mechanic, AAA,
whoever. They can spot basic engine and drivetrain problems before you
buy.

These are my experiences. The first two issues aren't cheap. But
otherwise it's a great 240hp, AWD sedan. I have not had many major
problems outside of these. I never worry about the engine and the all
wheel drivetrain.
