Low boost in 91 200q? PT swap ramifications...
Hey gang!
Well, I have my car back on the road. Some cosmetic issues are still being
attended to, but it is looking/running pretty well. Have a new grill trim
peice (V8-alike), and painted wasteline chrome. Looks good, though after 8
years of the chrome, it takes some getting used to.
I do have a boost problem, though. As follows: I had my TAP chip updated to the
2.5 bar pressure transducer (PT) and, in conjunction with the stiffer TAP
spring (there from the start - not new), I get between 1.8 bar and fuel
cuttoff, depending on how far down I screw the spring (mit allen-key
adjustment under WG cap).
So, I decided to run the stock spring, since this is really what the code was
designed for, along with the 2.5 PT. After the swap, I get only 1.7 bar max,
even though I have screwed the spring down as hard as the allen key will let
me (I did this to compensate for 'tired spring' disease, what with the 175k I
have on the car).
Question: those out there with Hoppen and IA mods, how much boost do you see
on the gauge with stock WG springs. I know the gauge is inaccurate, but I used
to see 2.0 with the 2.0 PT and TAP chip. With the 2.5 PT I get fuel cutoff
before I see 2.0. I get 1.9 max.
Is this gauge a relative instrument? EG is it deriving boost values from the
ECU, or from the vac line direct? I'm guessing the change to the 2.5 PT would
affect this reading if it is fed by the ECU. I want to install a small VDO
gauge in the cig lighter spot. Jeff Goggin has this on his car - tiny gauge
but works great and doesn't require much cutting to put in, looks fairly good,
not home-made. Where can I get one of these? I s'pose I need the 30 psi
version, not the 15 psi (not enough). Any other suggestions?
So, as it sits, I don't know if the boost readings the trip gauge is showing
are relative to which PT is used. Is a 1.7 bar reading with the 2.5 PT equal
to a 1.9 reading with a 2.0 PT?
If not, I have problems. TIA for any light to be shed on this.

Sarge
91 200q - back in action!
PS: Brett, if you're listening, I keep getting bounced from the 200q20v list.
What's the deal? I've corrected the time issues, though not zapped the PRAM yet...
